Did you know that an estimated 75 percent of dogs and cats develop some type of dental disease by the age of three? In addition to causing bad breath and tooth decay, poor oral health can lead to a variety of conditions in our four-legged friends. For example, without proper treatment, oral disease and infection can travel throughout an animal’s blood stream, resulting in complications to the heart, liver and kidneys.

The good news is that regular dental checkups with a veterinarian can prevent these and other complications as well as boost your pet’s vitality, appearance and overall well-being. Plus, by promoting good health and increasing longevity, good oral health will reduce the lifetime costs associated with pet ownership!

Recognizing the Signs of Poor Oral Health in Your Pet

Symptoms like the following are usually easy to detect and, in most cases, can be effectively treated here at Eugene Animal Hospital:

  • Bad breath
  • Visible buildup of plaque or tartar, especially near the gum line.
  • Swollen and/or discolored gums. As a general rule of thumb, your pet’s gums should be a healthy shade of pink
  • Bleeding gums.
  • Refusal to eat or signs of pain during mealtimes.
  • Decayed, missing or loose teeth.

Oral Health Services

At Eugene Animal Hospital, we take your pet’s oral health seriously. We offer a variety of services and are committed to the good oral health of your beloved pets.

Our oral health services include the following procedures:

  • Cleaning & Polishing: Tartar and plaque are removed with an ultrasonic scaler from the crown and any remaining buildup under the gum line is removed with a hand scaler or curette. The tooth surface is then polished smooth.
  • Fluoride treatment: Our polishing paste contains fluoride, which strengthens tooth enamel.
  • Digital X-ray technology: Radiographs allow us to visualize the root structures of the teeth, giving us a more complete picture of overall oral health than an oral exam alone. We are often able to identify problems that would otherwise go undetected as well as formulate the most effective treatment plan for your pet.
  • Oral examinations: Under anesthesia we are able to conduct a thorough oral assessment, including probing gingival pocket depths, checking for oral tumors or growths, evaluating gingivitis and level of periodontal disease.
  • Extractions for loose, broken, diseased, dead or abscessed teeth.
